9-Year-Old Paints Her Favourite Horse After 7 Lessons

There is something very touching about watching a child paint something they truly care about.

This young artist is only 9 years old. After 7 one-hour art lessons, she is painting her favourite real horse as a gift for someone she loves.

That makes the painting matter in a different way.

It is not a made-up horse. It is not a symbol of a horse. It is a real horse, and that means accuracy, care and feeling all become important.

What I love most in this little video is her concentration.

She is thinking about which brush to use, how to use it, when to change direction, when to work from light to dark, when to work from dark to light, and when to stop before the painting becomes overworked.

These are the quiet decisions that sit underneath good painting.

One of the loveliest parts was the background.

Many children would naturally try to outline the horse first and then paint carefully around it. But once she understood the visual logic, she realised that a soft, simple background could go in first, be dried quickly, and then the horse could become the star of the painting.

That one decision changed everything.

The background became supportive rather than distracting. It gave the painting space, atmosphere and calm, while allowing the viewer’s eye to go where it belonged.

This is also how we see.

We do not see everything in full detail all at once. Our eyes move from point to point, noticing what matters most. When the attention is on the horse, the background naturally becomes softer and quieter.

That is why teaching children the fundamentals of art matters.

Not copying the teacher blindly.
Not following a set of instructions without understanding.
But learning how to see, how to think, and how to make confident choices.

With Art At The Beach in Mawgan Porth, every lesson is adapted around the person, the place, the weather and the moment.

Sometimes we paint outside on the beach. Sometimes we work indoors. Sometimes the lesson focuses on acrylic painting, sometimes drawing, perspective, colour, brushwork or confidence.

The structure is always there, but the experience stays flexible… so the student can enjoy learning rather than worrying about getting everything right.

Art can also be a beautiful way to clear the mind. The attention settles into colour, shape, light and care. For a while, everything else becomes quieter.

This is the heart of Visual Awareness.

Learning to see.
Learning to understand.
Learning to create with confidence.
