You can make plenty of plans in Cornwall, but the weather occasionally has plans of its own!

This lovely family joined me for an art lesson in Mawgan Porth, Cornwall, but with intermittent wind and rain we decided that sitting out on the beach with paints and canvases might not be the most comfortable option.

So we took refuge in the Merrymoor Inn, still overlooking Mawgan Porth beach, and carried on painting.

Same view, four different paintings

This is one of the things I particularly love about teaching art.

Four people can look at the same sea and sky, use the same materials and hear the same information… and still produce four completely individual pieces of artwork.

Rather than trying to make everyone’s painting look the same, we talked about what was actually happening in the landscape… the light, colour, sea, sky and atmosphere… and each person interpreted it in their own way.

By the end we had four wonderfully different little paintings and, judging by those smiles, a very happy family art lesson too.

Sometimes the memorable days aren’t the ones that go exactly according to plan. The Cornish weather changed where we painted, but certainly didn’t spoil the afternoon.
