A Little Creativity in the Middle of Storm Austen!
While Storm Austen batters Cornwall and the trees in my garden are blowing every which way, I've spent a wonderful morning doing something I love... teaching art!
And what a lovely way to spend an hour, working online with this enthusiastic 10-year-old artist. Just look at that smile and the fantastic little still life she created during our Zoom lesson!
From Mawgan Porth to Online Art Lessons
We first met at Art at the Beach in Mawgan Porth, Cornwall, but all her art lessons with me have taken place online via Zoom.
It's wonderful that modern technology allows us to continue learning together, even when we're miles apart or the Cornish weather has other ideas!
Learning to Understand What We See
During our lessons, we've explored some fascinating fundamentals of art, including perspective, light and shadow, reflections, form and depth of field.
These might sound like complicated subjects for a 10-year-old, but when they're explained in ways that make sense, young minds are wonderfully receptive.
Rather than learning to reproduce one particular picture, she's developing an understanding of why objects look the way they do, how light creates form and how we can represent the three-dimensional world on a flat surface.
And that's what I find so exciting about teaching art. Once you understand the principles, you can begin applying that knowledge to anything you choose to draw or paint, developing your own ideas and individual artistic style.
Art Lessons Wherever You Are
Although I'm based in Cornwall and teach face-to-face at Art at the Beach in Mawgan Porth, my private Zoom art lessons allow children and adults to learn from wherever they live.
Whether you're a complete beginner, returning to art after many years or looking to build on existing skills, understanding the fundamentals can open up a whole new world of possibilities.
And sometimes the greatest reward isn't simply the finished artwork... it's seeing the confidence and enjoyment on a student's face.
I think we can all agree that this young artist has done a fantastic job!
