Age 10: Three Hours Later…
Age 10. Told she was bad at art. Three hours later…
This before-and-after sketch shows what can happen when a child is not just asked to copy, but is taught how to see.
This was not about copying one picture. It was about learning core visual knowledge: tone, shape, light, shadow, proportion and the spaces between things.
That knowledge does not belong to one drawing. Once understood, it can be carried into anything a student chooses to draw next.
Drawing is not handwriting. Art is not copying the teacher. And sometimes, when someone says a child is “no good”, it may say more about whether the right way in has been found than it does about the child’s ability to learn.
My job as an art teacher is to adapt, find the way in, and give each student the knowledge, structure and confidence to see for themselves.
No tricks. No scam. No special talent required. Just knowledge.
And when the knowledge changes, confidence changes too.
I don’t teach you to copy me. I teach you how to see for yourself.
