Art, Confidence and Smiles at Mawgan Porth
One of the greatest rewards of teaching has very little to do with the finished painting.
Of course I love seeing beautiful artwork emerge on the canvas, but what I treasure most is the moment someone's expression changes. The uncertainty disappears, a smile appears, and they suddenly realise they are capable of much more than they ever imagined.
That was exactly what happened during a recent lesson at beautiful Mawgan Porth.
It was such a pleasure spending a few hours painting with this lovely gentleman. Like many people who join me, he arrived hoping to learn how to paint. By the end of the lesson he had certainly created a painting to be proud of, but he also left with something much more valuable... the confidence and understanding to continue developing long after the lesson had ended.
People often tell me they "can't draw" or that they "aren't artistic". I don't believe either of those statements. Most people simply haven't been shown the underlying principles that make drawing and painting begin to make sense.
Over the past 20 years I've developed the Visual Awareness approach to teaching, combining the psychology, physiology and physics of how we see with what I call the grammar, spelling and punctuation of art... sketch, perspective and paint.
Once those foundations begin to click into place, everything changes. Instead of copying someone else's work, people begin to understand what they are actually looking at. They develop their own confidence, their own style and their own way of expressing the world around them.
That transformation is what inspires me every day. The painting becomes a wonderful reminder of the experience, but the knowledge stays with people for life.
If you've always wanted to paint, whether you're a complete beginner or someone returning to art after many years, perhaps this is the perfect time to discover what you're really capable of.
I look forward to welcoming you to Mawgan Porth and helping you unlock your own creative potential.
