Art Lessons in Cornwall: Start on Holiday, Carry It Home
One of the loveliest things about teaching art in Cornwall is seeing what happens when people begin to understand how to really look.
These two lovely ladies finished their paintings at the end of a three-hour art lesson here in Cornwall. They had both painted with me before, so they were already beginning to understand the Visual Awareness approach, but it is still wonderful to see what can be achieved in such a short time once the foundations begin to make sense.
One painted a beautiful Cornish cottage, full of warmth, texture and character. The other painted a much-loved cat, full of personality, expression and feeling. Two completely different subjects, both created through the same core principles: observation, structure, tone, colour, light, confidence and learning how to really see.
It was one of those proper Cornwall days when the weather could not quite decide what it was doing… wind, rain, sunshine and waves all arriving together. Painting indoors made perfect sense, but the same principles apply whether we are outside at Mawgan Porth, painting inside on a wild weather day, learning online, or continuing from home after a holiday.
That is the beauty of starting art while you are in Cornwall. You can begin here, surrounded by sea, sky, weather, cottages, coastline and inspiration… then carry that understanding home with you. The finished painting is the visible result, but the confidence and the new way of seeing are what stay.
For me, art lessons are never only about producing a picture. They are about slowing down, noticing more, understanding the building blocks of art, and realising that you are capable of far more than you may have believed. Once you understand the basics, you are not tied to one subject, one style or one fixed method. You begin to make your own decisions as an artist.
This is why I teach the fundamentals of art rather than a fixed formula. Whether someone wants to paint a Cornish seascape, a cottage, a pet portrait, a flower, a figure, or a memory from a special place, the same knowledge gives them a way in.
These two paintings are a lovely reminder of what can happen in just three hours when knowledge, encouragement and concentration come together. Two paintings, two smiles, and another beautiful creative moment in Cornwall.
