Two Students... Two Very Different Artistic Journeys

One of the greatest rewards of teaching is watching students discover who they are as artists.

These two wonderful paintings were created by two of my students after completing my full nine hour programme. Although they both learnt exactly the same fundamentals, their artwork couldn't be more different.

One has fallen in love with the Cornish landscape, capturing the cliffs, seas, boats and ever-changing coastline that inspires her. The other enjoys exploring a wonderfully diverse range of subjects, from fantasy and flowers to seascapes, constantly experimenting with new ideas and techniques.

Their journeys have been different too. One now develops her work independently, knowing I'm always available with free WhatsApp support whenever she needs a little guidance. The other continues to enjoy regular Zoom lessons, stretching her creativity and building on the foundations we've developed together.

That's exactly how I believe art should be taught.

I don't teach people to copy my style. I teach the grammar, spelling and punctuation of art... the fundamentals that give people the confidence to understand what they're seeing and express it in their own unique way.

When students truly understand the foundations, something wonderful happens. They stop wondering what they should paint and begin creating artwork that reflects their own interests, personality and experiences.

Nothing gives me greater satisfaction than seeing that confidence grow. Watching students create paintings they're genuinely proud of, and eventually seeing others want to own those paintings, is incredibly rewarding.
