Another wonderful morning painting at Mawgan Porth… with the added bonus of Spitfires flying overhead!
This amazing student completed my nine hour Art Masterclass some time ago, combining face to face lessons with the online course. Since then, we have continued meeting from time to time to explore new ideas, test different approaches and keep her artwork moving forward.
After spending quite a while working in watercolour, she decided to return to acrylics and completed this beautiful little painting in around an hour.
That is the advantage of already understanding the core fundamentals of art. Instead of struggling with how to begin, she could enjoy the process and concentrate on what she was seeing.
People often ask whether I teach acrylics, watercolour or oils. The truth is… I teach the fundamentals of art.
Once you understand light, perspective, colour, atmosphere and depth, you can move between different mediums with far greater confidence.
It is a bit like cooking. Once you understand the basic techniques, moving from Italian to French or Indian cooking becomes much easier. The ingredients may change, but the foundations remain the same.
This is why learning the fundamentals gives an artist so much freedom. You are not tied to one medium or one method. You can explore, experiment and develop your own style with understanding.
And I think that smile says it all.
