Sometimes the Greatest Transformation Is in the Way We See
📍Mawgan Porth, Cornwall
Some art lessons seem to reflect the creative process perfectly.
This particular lesson began in glorious sunshine, was interrupted by a classic Cornish rain shower, and ended with the sun shining once again. It seemed rather fitting, because learning is a journey too... sometimes unexpected, but always rewarding.
After the lesson, this lovely lady very kindly recorded a short video sharing her experience. Hearing someone talk about how much they enjoyed the day is always wonderful, but what means even more to me is hearing them say how much they learnt and how differently they now look at art.
That is what Visual Awareness is all about.
For over 45 years I have been fascinated by one simple question... How do we really see?
My lessons are not about teaching people to paint like me or asking them to reproduce what they are looking at. They are about helping people understand how the brain interprets light, colour, space, form and depth. Once those principles become clear, art becomes less about guessing and more about understanding.
I often say that the greatest lesson isn't learning how to draw... it's learning how to observe.
Whether you are picking up a pencil for the very first time, returning to art after many years, or have painted for decades, there is always another level to discover. The principles remain the same, while your confidence, understanding and enjoyment continue to grow.
Teaching at beautiful Mawgan Porth allows nature to become part of every lesson. The changing light, the reflections on the sea, the shifting weather and the dramatic Cornish landscape provide endless opportunities to explore not only art, but perception itself.
Sometimes the greatest transformation isn't the painting you take home...
It's the way you begin to see the world.
If you've ever thought, "I'd love to paint, but I don't know where to start," or if you've been painting for years and want to deepen your understanding, I'd love to welcome you to one of my lessons.
Lessons are available face-to-face at Mawgan Porth in Cornwall, via Zoom, and through my comprehensive online Visual Awareness course, so wherever you are in the world, you can begin your own journey of learning to truly see.
