One of the Greatest Rewards of Teaching
As an artist and teacher, there are many rewarding moments, but few compare to seeing a student create something they never believed they could.
The beautiful sunset painting shown here wasn't painted by me. It was created by one of my students during a lesson at my home, where we were exploring sunsets, reflections on water and how light transforms a landscape.
Watching students achieve work of this quality is something I never take for granted. My students are of all ages and abilities, and they join me from Cornwall, across the UK and from many different parts of the world. Some learn with me in person, others online or by Zoom, but the aim is always the same.
I don't teach people to copy my paintings. I teach the fundamentals of art... how to understand what you're truly seeing. Once you understand perspective, light, colour and brush technique, you gain the confidence to develop your own unique artistic style.
Students who complete my full nine hour The Secret of Art programme... Sketch, Perspective and Paint... and reach a professional standard are invited to exhibit and even sell their artwork through my website and at Betty's Surf Shop in Mawgan Porth.
For me, the greatest success isn't creating another painting myself. It's watching someone else's confidence grow as they realise what they're capable of, and seeing the pride on their face when they create artwork they genuinely love... sometimes even selling it.
Imagine walking into Betty's Surf Shop in Mawgan Porth one day and seeing your own artwork on display.
It could be the beginning of your own artistic journey.
