Holding the View That Inspired the Painting

There is something incredibly satisfying about standing in the very place that inspired a painting and holding the finished artwork in your hands.

This is Mawgan Porth… one of Cornwall's most beautiful beaches and somewhere that never fails to inspire me. Every tide changes the landscape. Every cloud changes the light. Every visit offers something new to observe.

People often ask me how I manage to capture the atmosphere of a place. The answer isn't a secret technique or copying what I see. It's understanding what I'm looking at.

Why are the distant cliffs softer? Why does the wet sand sparkle? Why does the sea change colour from deep blue to turquoise? Once you understand the fundamentals behind what your eyes are seeing, painting becomes so much more enjoyable and much less intimidating.

That philosophy has become the foundation of everything I teach through Visual Awareness. Whether someone joins me for a painting lesson on the beach, studies online or comes for individual tuition, my aim is always the same… to help people understand art rather than simply copy it.

One of the greatest pleasures of being an artist in Mawgan Porth is sharing this incredible coastline with others. Watching someone suddenly realise they can create a painting they never thought possible is every bit as rewarding as finishing one of my own.
