Beauty of Painting in Cornwall

One of the most beautiful things about painting is that it can hold far more than the view in front of you.

A painting can carry atmosphere, memory, dream, feeling, light, place, time and all the quiet thoughts that arrive when you are fully absorbed in the moment.

Cornwall’s beaches are mesmerising in their own way. From Mawgan Porth to the quieter coves, wide sands and shifting skies, each place has its own character, its own rhythm, and its own way of staying with you.

I love painting them for myself and for other people because a painting can become a lasting reminder of a place someone loves. Sometimes it captures a feeling they had there. Sometimes it awakens a memory they did not even know they were carrying.

In this painting, I have painted myself painting myself… painting both the view and my memories.

It feels almost like looking down a tunnel of time, where images, feelings, senses and memories all meet on the canvas.

That is the magic of painting in flow. It is not paint by numbers. Something moves from within, through the arm, and into the work. It is hard to describe, yet people often recognise it when they see it.

For me, that is part of the beauty of painting Cornwall.

Whether I am painting for myself, teaching art lessons in Mawgan Porth, creating artwork for someone who loves Cornwall, or helping a student find their own confidence, the same thread is always there: art is never only about what we see. It is also about what we feel, remember and carry forward.

That is why Cornish artwork can mean so much. It can hold a beach, a day, a person, a season, a dream, or a moment someone wants to keep close.
