Between Tide and Headland, Mawgan Porth
A very windy Cornish day gave me the perfect excuse to spend a little more time indoors and finally add a few new original paintings to the website.
One of them is Between Tide and Headland, Mawgan Porth… an original painting on deep-edge canvas, inspired by the wide, open sweep of Mawgan Porth Beach in Cornwall.
This seascape captures the place where sea, sand and cliffs seem to breathe together in shifting coastal light. The soft movement of the tide, the warmth of the sand and the strength of the green headlands give the painting a beautiful sense of space, drawing the eye gently across the shoreline and out into the open blue of the sky.
There is a real feeling of calm openness in this piece… the kind of moment you get when you stand on Mawgan Porth Beach and everything seems to open out in front of you. The panoramic format suits that feeling beautifully, giving the painting a clean, contemporary presence while still holding the softness and atmosphere of the Cornish coast.
For me, painting is never only about making a picture. It is a way of slowing the mind, focusing the senses and reconnecting with the world in front of you. The rhythm of the tide, the pull of the headland, the colour in the sand, the movement of the clouds and the changing light all become part of the experience.
That is also why I love teaching art. I love it when I get time to paint, but I also love helping other people learn how to see, understand and create their own version of that feeling. Through my art lessons in Mawgan Porth, Cornwall, I teach people the fundamentals of art… not copying a style, but learning the grammar, spelling and punctuation of seeing: sketch, perspective and paint.
