Drawing Out Potential… More Than a Beautiful Drawing

Sometimes the greatest transformation doesn’t happen on the paper.

It happens in the person holding the pencil.

Recently, I spent just over an hour and a half with a lovely 14 year old who arrived feeling a little uncertain about where to begin. Like so many people, she wasn’t lacking ability. She simply didn’t yet understand the process.

By the end of the session she had a smile from ear to ear… and a portrait she was genuinely proud of.

What changed wasn’t her natural talent.

It was her posture, her knowledge and her perspective.

These three things influence everything that follows. When we change our physical relationship with the subject, understand the principles behind what we are seeing and begin looking with greater awareness, sketching becomes far less about uncertainty and far more about informed decisions.

The logic and psychology behind seeing

One of the ideas I love sharing is the logic and psychology of how we see, and how the viewer sees.

We don’t simply draw objects. We interpret light, shape, space, contrast and relationships. At the same time, every mark influences how another person experiences the finished artwork.

Understanding this can completely change the way an artist approaches a sketch.

During this short session, something lovely happened.

The drawing stopped feeling like a struggle.

Instead of wondering where the next line should go, she began making confident, informed decisions. The portrait started to emerge from the page, almost as though it were drawing itself out rather than being scratched onto the surface.

She didn’t complete the whole proper lesson. She received a kickstart… enough knowledge to help her change her posture, her thinking and her approach.

Yet within just over an hour and a half, uncertainty began to give way to speed, passion and confidence.

The student creates the transformation

Yes, I helped her understand the principles, but she did the work.

She observed. She thought. She adjusted. She made the decisions and brought the portrait to life.

That is what makes moments like this so special.

The result isn’t only a beautiful drawing. It is a young artist discovering that she can achieve far more than she first believed.

Knowledge doesn’t replace creativity… it gives creativity the freedom to choose.

For me, the greatest artwork in this photograph is the smile.

That is what drawing out potential really means.
