Clever Questions, Big Smiles… and Beautiful Paintings!

Some of the best moments in my art lessons don't happen when somebody picks up a paintbrush… they happen when somebody answers a question.

Today was one of those wonderful mornings.

I had the pleasure of teaching a lovely family here at Art at the Beach in Mawgan Porth, Cornwall, and from the very beginning there was laughter, curiosity and a real willingness to learn.

One of my favourite ways of teaching is by asking questions. Not because I'm trying to test anyone or catch them out, but because questions encourage people to slow down, observe and think for themselves. When someone discovers an answer rather than simply being told it, that knowledge stays with them.

The wonderful thing is that you never know who will have the answer. Sometimes it's the youngest member of the family. Sometimes it's the quietest person. Those moments often produce the biggest smiles, not only from the person answering but from everyone around them.

Learning should be enjoyable. When people are laughing, talking, observing and sharing ideas, they're far more open to understanding what they're seeing. That's when art becomes much more than copying a picture. It becomes a way of understanding the world around us.

As the lesson progressed, everyone grew in confidence. Brushstrokes became more assured, colours became more thoughtful, and each painting developed in its own unique way.

By the end of the session everyone had created their own artwork, but they also went home with something even more valuable… a better understanding of how to observe, how to think differently and how to trust what they see.

Those are the moments I love most as an artist and teacher.
