Three Generations Painting Together at Mawgan Porth 🎨🌊💙
There is something rather special about painting together as a family… and this art lesson at Mawgan Porth, Cornwall brought three generations together for a birthday by the sea.
Grandparents and their birthday boy grandson joined me on the beach for an en plein air painting lesson, surrounded by the wonderful Cornish coastline.
The aim wasn’t for everyone to produce the same painting. Quite the opposite.
One of the things I love about teaching art is helping people understand what they are looking at and giving them the fundamental skills to interpret it in their own way. Even when three people are sitting together, looking at the same Mawgan Porth seascape, the resulting artwork can be completely individual.
And that is exactly what happened here.
Three people. Three paintings. Three very different interpretations of the sea and landscape in front of them.
There was plenty of learning along the way, but also lots of talking, laughing and giggling. And those smiles at the end probably tell the story better than I can! 😊
Art lessons that become part of the holiday
For families visiting Mawgan Porth and Cornwall, an art lesson can be much more than learning how to paint.
It is time spent properly together, away from screens and everyday distractions, looking at the landscape, noticing things you might otherwise walk straight past and creating something personal.
In this case, it also happened to be a birthday celebration. 🎂
Instead of going home with a conventional souvenir, each member of the family left with their own original seascape painting and, hopefully, some very happy memories attached to it.
You don’t need to be “good at art”
My Mawgan Porth art lessons are for all ages and abilities, from complete beginners who are convinced they cannot draw or paint, through to experienced artists wanting to develop their skills.
I teach the fundamentals behind drawing and painting rather than asking people to copy what I do. Understanding how to really see, how perspective works, how light and colour behave and how to use your materials gives you the freedom to develop your own technique.
That is why I particularly love seeing several people paint the same view and produce completely different artwork.
There isn't one correct painting waiting to be discovered.
There is yours.
And on this particular day at Mawgan Porth, there were three of them… accompanied by three enormous smiles. 🎨🌊💙
