From a Blank Canvas to a Family Memory at Mawgan Porth

Sometimes a painting captures far more than a view. It captures a particular day, the people who were there and a memory that can be taken home.

This lovely family first saw me painting on the beach at Mawgan Porth, Cornwall, when there was nothing in front of me except a completely blank canvas.

Throughout the day they kept coming back to see how I was getting on. We chatted while I worked and, little by little, they watched the painting grow. The blue Cornish sky appeared, followed by the sea, sand, reflections and all those subtle changes of colour that make Mawgan Porth such a wonderful place to paint.

Then came the final detail.

I painted the five members of the family into the scene, tiny figures in the far distance looking out to sea. If you look closely at the finished artwork, you can spot all five of them over on the left.

They were absolutely thrilled and bought the original painting.

What makes this one particularly special is that they didn't simply choose an artwork of a favourite place. They had watched it being created from the very beginning. They had stopped to chat, returned throughout the day and become part of the experience before finally becoming part of the painting itself.

As an artist in Mawgan Porth, I love being able to create artwork that holds these personal connections. A painting of Cornwall can remind someone of the sea, the light and a favourite beach, but when their own story becomes part of it, it can hold the memory of one very particular moment in time.

From a blank canvas on Mawgan Porth beach to a painting hanging in a family's home… with five tiny figures forever looking out to sea.

That is rather special. ❤️
