What begins as a holiday art lesson in Cornwall can sometimes become a lifetime skill.
This student first came to me for an art lesson while visiting Cornwall, then carried on learning online from home.
The first dog was drawn before tuition. The second dog was drawn after just one hour of tuition, once he began to understand the principles of looking, rather than trying to process everything he saw without a clear method.
Within a year, with practice, he was producing work like the paintings shown below. The chess piece developed over a few weeks because of the high level of perspective involved. The eye was painted during one one-hour online art lesson, completely freehand, while looking at his own eye in the mirror.
This is what I love about teaching art. It is not about copying me. It is about learning how to see, understand light, shape, tone, perspective and detail… then using that knowledge in your own way.
For young people working towards GCSE or A-level art, one or two focused lessons can make an enormous difference, especially with confidence, portfolio work, drawing, painting or knowing how to move forward.
But this is not only for children or exam students. Adults are just as welcome, especially if you have always wanted to draw or paint but felt unsure where to begin.
