From Concentration to Confidence
One of the most rewarding parts of teaching isn't simply watching a painting develop... it's watching confidence grow.
This wonderful nine year old has been working through my course in one hour sessions, gradually building knowledge, understanding and confidence. Every lesson adds another layer to the foundations, helping her understand not only how to paint, but why things appear as they do.
Rather than becoming overwhelmed by every detail at once, she has learnt to see in bite size chunks. We explore the science behind what we observe... perspective, angles, proportion, light, colour, psychology, geology and, in the case of this horse, its underlying biology and anatomy. These are the grammar, spelling and punctuation of art. Once those foundations are secure, creativity has the freedom to flourish.
Throughout this painting she chatted, smiled and laughed, often telling me what she was going to do next and, more importantly, why. That is always one of my favourite moments because it tells me the knowledge is becoming her own.
The more a student learns, the more my role changes. Instead of leading every step, I quietly observe, stepping in only if their thinking starts to drift or they begin to lose confidence. This allows them to make their own decisions whilst knowing there is support if they genuinely need it.
There is a well recognised teaching principle that asking learners to explain what they are doing strengthens understanding. By putting her thinking into words, she wasn't simply showing me that she understood... she was reinforcing that understanding herself, helping it become lasting knowledge.
My aim has never been to create students who rely on me. My aim is to give them the knowledge, confidence and understanding to continue creating with or without me. Once the lesson is over, I remain available for a quick call or message if they need help with something we've already covered, but the real success comes when they realise they can trust their own judgement.
Art is the vehicle. Understanding is the destination.
