Learning Watercolour: Capturing a Tall Ship in Full Sail

Isn't this lovely! ⛵🎨🌊

One of the local gentlemen I've been working with here in Cornwall has been developing his watercolour techniques, and I thought you might enjoy seeing how beautifully he's progressing.

His latest artwork depicts a magnificent tall ship under sail, and what particularly catches my eye is the wonderful sense of movement he's beginning to capture.

The wind is filling those great sails, the ship appears to lean into the breeze, and her bow cuts through the waves as she makes her way across the sea.

Understanding Movement in Watercolour Painting

When we look at a painting of a sailing ship, there is so much more happening than we might initially realise.

The shape of the sails tells us something about the direction of the wind. The angle of the vessel helps communicate its movement, while the waves and the way the hull meets the water contribute to the feeling of a ship travelling through the sea.

Understanding these relationships is an important part of learning to draw and paint. Rather than simply copying the shapes we see, we begin to understand why those shapes appear as they do.

In this particular watercolour, I love the delicate washes of blue, the restrained use of colour and the subtle pencil work that helps define the structure of the ship without overpowering the painting.

Developing Your Own Artistic Style

One of the things I find most rewarding about teaching art is watching people develop their understanding and then use that knowledge in their own individual way.

Whether we're working with watercolours, acrylics or simply a pencil, the underlying principles remain the same.

Perspective, light, shadow, colour and an understanding of what we're looking at all contribute to the finished artwork.

But the exciting part comes when someone begins to put those principles together for themselves.

That's when their own interpretation, personality and artistic style really begin to emerge.

The Pleasure of Watching Someone Progress

Having taught art for many years, both here in Cornwall and further afield, I never tire of seeing that moment when someone's growing understanding begins to show in their artwork.

Sometimes it's a change in how they observe light. Sometimes it's a better understanding of perspective. And sometimes it's the ability to suggest movement and atmosphere with only a few carefully considered marks.

This lovely tall ship watercolour is another example of that developing understanding.

And what a pleasure it is to see! Well done! 👏💙
