9-Year-Old Painting Mawgan Porth Beach from the Merrymoor Inn
Some days in Cornwall… the wind decides for you.
The plan had been to paint outside on Mawgan Porth Beach… surrounded by the dunes, the marram grass, and that beautiful shifting light.
But instead… we found ourselves inside… looking out through the windows of the Merrymoor Inn.
And in many ways… it made the moment even more powerful.
Because what we had wasn’t only a view…
We had time to really observe… to slow down… to notice.
Working with a 9-year-old, something lovely began to happen.
There was chatter… excitement… and then a quiet shift.
Little pieces of remembered information from previous lessons began to surface… not as instructions… but as understanding.
They weren’t being followed…
They were being used.
Naturally… instinctively… because they made sense.
The dunes weren’t “sand”… they had structure.
The marram grass wasn’t “green”… it had movement.
The water wasn’t “blue”… it held light… reflection… atmosphere.
Piece by piece… it all came together.
Not forced… not overthought… simply understood.
And the result speaks for itself.
A painting that captures not only what was seen… but what was felt.
This is why I teach the way I do.
Because once someone truly understands how to see… they are no longer limited… they can create anything.
