Mawgan Porth… Beautiful by Day, Breathtaking by Night
There are some places that never lose their magic, no matter how many times you visit them. For me, Mawgan Porth is one of those places.
By day, the sea glows with shades of turquoise and blue. Families enjoy the beach, surfers search for the perfect wave, and the Cornish coastline reveals its incredible beauty. Then, as evening arrives, everything changes.
The sky begins to fill with warm oranges, deep reds and soft purples. The tide reflects every colour, the cliffs become silhouettes, and for a few precious moments the whole bay seems to glow. It is impossible not to stop and simply watch.
This painting was inspired by one of those unforgettable evenings. Standing on the beach, watching the sun slowly disappear beyond the horizon, I knew it was a moment I wanted to capture on canvas.
Although I have painted Mawgan Porth many times over the years, no two paintings are ever the same. Every tide, every cloud formation and every sunset creates a completely different atmosphere. That is what keeps drawing me back with my easel. Nature is always changing, always teaching us to look a little more closely.
As an artist in Mawgan Porth, Cornwall, I spend countless hours observing the coastline. It is those quiet moments of observation that help me understand not only the colours of the sea and sky, but also the changing light, reflections and mood that make each painting unique.
One of the greatest gifts art has given me is the opportunity to slow down and really see. When we take the time to observe, we notice details that are so easily missed in everyday life. Every painting becomes a memory… not only of a place, but of a moment in time.
Whether you know Mawgan Porth well or are planning your first visit, I hope this painting brings back memories of Cornwall's spectacular coastline and reminds you why so many people fall in love with this beautiful beach.
So, which do you prefer?
Mawgan Porth by day with its sparkling turquoise sea… or by night, when the sunset sets the whole bay alight?
I'd love to hear your favourite time of day and the memories this special place brings back for you.
