A Merrymoor Memory in Paint

Last night was a very special evening at the Merrymoor Inn in Mawgan Porth.

The celebration marked 65 years of the Merrymoor being held by the same family. Dudley and Lynn have now handed the pub on to Nick and Sarah, continuing a story that is woven deeply into Mawgan Porth, Cornwall, and into the lives of so many local people and visitors.

I was honoured to be asked to paint Dudley and Ian’s parents on the beach with their beloved dog, Lemmy.

Some commissions are about far more than creating a likeness. They are about memory, family, place and feeling. This one held all of that. A much-loved couple, a cherished dog, the beach, and a family story connected to one of Mawgan Porth’s most familiar and loved places.

It was especially meaningful for me because the Merrymoor Inn and Ben have been incredibly kind to me over my 10 years and more in Mawgan Porth. That kind of quiet support matters. When you work as an artist in Cornwall, painting on the beach, teaching art lessons, building a business and trying to keep going through every season, those acts of kindness stay with you.

That is what I love about painting commissions. A painting is not simply about what is visible on the surface. It can become a doorway back to a person, a place, a moment, a story, or a feeling that matters.

This painting was created as a family memory, but it also belongs to the wider story of Mawgan Porth. A pub that has held generations of memories. A family handing the next chapter on. A beach that carries so many stories. A dog called Lemmy still remembered with love.

As an artist in Mawgan Porth, I feel very privileged when people trust me with memories like this.
