Online Art Lessons: Amazing Drawing Progress

Learning to See: A 10-Year-Old Artist's Amazing Progress in One Hour

One of the greatest pleasures of teaching art is watching the moment when something suddenly makes sense. That wonderful little moment when a student looks at their work, looks at what they're drawing and says, "Oh… now I get it!"

That's exactly what happened during a recent online Zoom art lesson with this lovely 10-year-old student.

From Art Lessons in Cornwall to Learning Online

We first worked together here in Cornwall, and now she continues her art lessons with me online through Zoom. It's a wonderful way to build on what we've already explored together, wherever she happens to be.

During this particular lesson, we were studying something surprisingly challenging: drawing a hand.

The two drawings in the photograph show her progress over just one hour. What a difference!

Why Learning to Look Changes Everything

When we draw, our brains often encourage us to use familiar ideas and symbols rather than carefully observe what's actually in front of us.

Hands are a perfect example. We all know what a hand looks like, but drawing one convincingly requires us to understand the relationships between shapes, proportions, angles, light and shadow.

Children can sometimes be wonderfully receptive to a different way of looking. They may have fewer established drawing habits to reconsider, making it exciting to see how quickly their understanding develops when the principles begin to make sense.

This young lady was enthusiastic, attentive and eager to experiment. But the most rewarding part wasn't simply seeing her drawing improve. It was hearing her say, "Oh… now I get it!"

That moment of understanding is far more valuable than copying a picture successfully. It gives her knowledge she can apply to whatever she chooses to draw next.

Teaching Understanding, Not Copying

My Visual Awareness approach to art education explores the fundamentals behind drawing and painting, including the psychology of how we see, observation, proportion, perspective, light and colour.

Through my Secret of Art Masterclass, students explore three core areas: Sketch, Perspective and Paint. The aim is to understand why things look the way they do, so each student can develop their own individual artistic technique.

Whether I'm teaching on the beach at Mawgan Porth in Cornwall or working with someone online through Zoom, the principles remain the same.

And moments like this remind me why I love teaching so much. A bright, enthusiastic young artist, an hour of learning, and a completely new way of seeing.
