Capturing the Magic of a Cornish Wave

Some paintings seem to paint themselves. Others ask much more of you.

This latest seascape has taken two full days so far, and it's nearly complete. My goal wasn't simply to paint a wave, but to capture that fleeting moment when sunlight shines through the water, revealing the beautiful translucent colours, sparkling reflections and incredible energy that make the Cornish coastline so unforgettable.

Mawgan Porth has endless moods. Every wave is different. Every change in the light creates new colours, reflections and patterns beneath the surface. Those constantly changing conditions are part of what makes painting outdoors both challenging and rewarding.

One of the unexpected highlights while working on this painting was chatting with several local surfers. A special thank you to the team at King Surf for sharing your knowledge and helping me check I was capturing the wave from a surfer's point of view. Understanding how a wave stands, curls and moves adds another layer of authenticity that only comes from people who know the sea so well.

It's one of the things I love most about being an artist in Mawgan Porth. Every painting becomes part of the local community, with conversations, advice, encouragement and shared appreciation for this remarkable coastline.

The painting is now almost complete and has already attracted a great deal of interest. It has been wonderful to hear from so many people who have connected with it and the memories it brings back of Cornwall.
