Painting en plein air at Mawgan Porth
There is something very special about painting outdoors in Cornwall, especially on a day like this at Mawgan Porth. The light changes quickly, the tide shifts, the clouds move across the sky, and the whole beach seems alive with atmosphere.
This painting was created en plein air, right there on the sand, with the real view in front of me and the canvas responding to the moment. That is one of the joys of painting outside. You are not copying a photograph later. You are looking, adjusting, noticing, and translating what you truly see into paint.
Mawgan Porth has its own rhythm and beauty. The sweep of the beach, the changing reflections in the water, the softness of the sand against the rocks, and the clear Cornish light all create a scene that is full of movement and calm at the same time.
As an artist in Cornwall, I always love those moments when people stop to watch, ask questions, or simply share in the scene for a minute. Art has a lovely way of creating connection. A painting is never only about the place itself. It is also about the feeling of being there.
Much of what I teach through Art at the Beach and Visual Awareness is about understanding what you are seeing… not copying a teacher blindly, but learning how to observe light, tone, colour, shape, atmosphere, and perspective for yourself. That is where real confidence begins.
If you would like to experience painting in Cornwall, I offer art lessons in Mawgan Porth, private tuition, and online learning designed to help you understand the fundamentals and grow your own technique.
