Mawgan Porth, Cornwall… A Painting in Progress
I've been busy painting commissions and working on other artworks over the last few days, and while waiting for one painting to dry, I managed to do a little more work on this one!
As many of you know, I love painting en plein air, particularly at Mawgan Porth on the beautiful north Cornish coast. I'd hoped to spend another couple of hours finishing this painting on the beach, but today's dreadful rain put paid to that idea!
One of the things I love most about Mawgan Porth is its enormous skies. The constantly changing clouds, the movement of light across the sand and the wonderful atmosphere of the coastline provide endless inspiration for an artist.
This original painting measures 30 × 20 inches (approximately 76 × 51 cm). There's still a little more work to do, but it's getting there!
Painting is about far more than reproducing what we see. Understanding light, colour, perspective and atmosphere allows us to interpret a landscape rather than simply copy it. These are the same fundamental principles I explore with students during my art lessons in Cornwall and online.
I'm hoping to return to Mawgan Porth to finish the painting en plein air when the weather allows.
In the meantime, I thought you might enjoy seeing it at this stage. I'll share the finished artwork when it's ready!
