Making Our Own Sunshine at Mawgan Porth

It may have been a damp and miserable day at Mawgan Porth, Cornwall, but these two beautiful, happy ladies brought plenty of their own light and sunshine. ☔️☀️🎨

Two lovely friends, who also happen to be mother-in-laws, were spending time together on holiday and decided that a little Cornish rain wasn't going to stop them painting.

There was so much fun, plenty of giggles and, apparently, quite a few stories to tell afterwards! But amongst all that laughter there was plenty of looking, learning and painting too.

Two Artists, One View, Two Different Paintings

One of the things I love most about teaching art is seeing how differently two people can interpret the same view. They were both looking out towards Mawgan Porth, both learning about the sea, sky, light and landscape, yet each produced a painting that was completely their own.

That's an important part of the way I teach. Learning the fundamentals of art isn't about copying somebody else's painting. It's about learning how to look, understand what you are seeing and then make your own artistic decisions.

At the end of the lesson, they had two lovely little paintings of Mawgan Porth to take home from their Cornwall holiday… along with rather a lot of laughter and memories from the day.

Painting Whatever the Cornish Weather

A very big thank you to the Merrymoor Inn at Mawgan Porth for letting us take refuge from the weather on the stage in their garden. Having somewhere sheltered meant the art lesson, learning and laughter could carry on while the Cornish weather did its own thing outside.

Sometimes an art lesson is about far more than the finished artwork. It's about taking time to really look at the world around you, discovering what you can create and enjoying the experience of doing it together.

And sometimes, on a grey day in Cornwall, you simply have to make your own sunshine. ☀️💙🎨
