Pebble in the Stream... Finding Inspiration at Mawgan Porth
Some paintings begin with an idea. Others begin with a moment.
Today, sitting on Mawgan Porth Beach in the sunshine, I found myself watching the stream rather than the sea.
Families were enjoying a perfect summer's day. Children were paddling through the shallow water, dropping pebbles into the stream, searching for tiny fish with their fishing nets, building little dams and collecting beautiful stones from the riverbed.
One child dropped a pebble into the water and I became fascinated by what happened next.
As the pebble disappeared beneath the surface, perfect circles spread gently across the water. Through those moving ripples I could still see every stone beneath... distorted for a moment, yet still beautifully clear.
It reminded me how extraordinary ordinary moments can be when we take the time to really observe them.
That became the inspiration for this painting, Pebble in the Stream.
As an artist, I'm constantly reminded that nature provides endless lessons if we're willing to slow down and look. The movement of water, the colours hidden beneath the surface, the changing reflections and the tiny events that most people walk past all become opportunities to learn and to create.
One of the greatest pleasures of painting in Mawgan Porth is that inspiration isn't reserved for dramatic sunsets or crashing waves. Sometimes it arrives in the smallest of moments... a child dropping a pebble into a stream and watching the ripples spread across the water.
Those are often the moments that stay with us the longest.
