Remembrance Commission Painting in Cornwall

Sometimes a painting becomes much more than a painting.

This commission was created as a deeply personal remembrance of a much-loved son and brother. The family had seen me painting on Mawgan Porth beach in Cornwall for many years and had already bought one of my beach paintings while on holiday. Later, they trusted me with this very special piece.

The painting brought together several different photographs: family memories, the sister, the dogs, the beach, and the brother they had lost. The aim was not simply to copy one photograph, but to create one artwork that felt natural, loving and true.

Getting the likeness right mattered enormously. Not just the features, but the feeling of the person. The stance, the warmth, the proportions, and the small details that make someone instantly recognisable to the people who love them most.

Throughout the process, I kept the family updated from the first outline to the final layers, sending photographs as the painting developed and making careful adjustments along the way. That attention to detail is a very important part of how I work with personal commissions.

For me, a commission like this is never just about paint on canvas. It is about listening, observing, understanding light, proportion, perspective and feeling … then gently bringing all those pieces together into an artwork that can hold memory, love and place.
