Best Lesson Ever? Learning to See at Mawgan Porth
On a beautiful summer's day at Mawgan Porth, I had the pleasure of teaching sketching to a wonderful lady, accompanied by her beautifully behaved dog. It was one of those lessons filled with laughter, curiosity and those magical moments when everything suddenly clicks.
Rather than simply learning to draw, we explored the foundations that make drawing easier and more enjoyable. We looked at the psychology of how we see, why our brains create optical illusions, how artists create the illusion of distance, and how something as simple as improving your posture can help you draw more comfortably and accurately.
These are all part of my Visual Awareness approach… helping people understand what they are looking at rather than trying to copy what they think they see.
The biggest breakthrough isn't always the finished sketch. It's learning to trust your own observation and seeing the world with fresh eyes.
At the end of the lesson came my favourite comment… "Best lesson ever!" Moments like that make teaching such a privilege.
If you're visiting Cornwall and would like to discover a different way of learning art, I'd love to welcome you to one of my sketching or painting experiences on the beautiful beach at Mawgan Porth.
