The Joy of Teaching Art at Mawgan Porth, Cornwall

There is something incredibly special about watching someone discover what they are truly capable of!

After ten years of painting and teaching art on the beautiful beach at Mawgan Porth in Cornwall, I still experience that wonderful feeling of pride when one of my students produces a painting like this.

This lovely interpretation of Mawgan Porth was created by one of my students after only a few lessons together, and I couldn't be more delighted with what they have achieved!

It's About So Much More Than the Finished Painting

Of course, seeing a beautiful piece of artwork is wonderful. But for me, the real magic happens long before the painting is finished.

It's that moment when things begin to click. When someone starts to understand the mechanics behind what they are doing.

Why does the distant headland appear softer? How do changes in colour and tone create the illusion of space? Why does the wet sand reflect the sky, and how can we capture that sense of light and atmosphere?

Rather than teaching people to copy what they see, I help them understand WHY things look the way they do.

Once they begin to understand the fundamentals of art, from perspective and observation to light, colour and brush technique, something wonderful happens.

They begin to trust their own eyes!

That Wonderful Sparkle of Confidence

And then comes my favourite moment of all… that sparkle in their eyes when they realise, often to their own surprise, "I can actually do this!"

There's almost something maternal about the feeling. I find myself sharing their excitement, celebrating their discoveries and feeling every bit as delighted as they are when they succeed.

After more than four decades of teaching, that feeling has never diminished.

Because the greatest reward in teaching art isn't what I can paint… it's helping someone discover what THEY can paint!

Learning to See Mawgan Porth Through an Artist's Eyes

Mawgan Porth is a wonderful outdoor classroom. Its changing tides, dramatic headlands, reflections and extraordinary Cornish light offer endless opportunities to explore the relationship between art, science and observation.

And the most exciting thing is that the understanding developed during an art lesson here can be applied to almost anything someone chooses to draw or paint in the future.

That's what I want my students to take away with them. Not simply a lovely painting of Cornwall, but the knowledge, understanding and confidence to develop their own artistic style.

And looking at this beautiful painting of Mawgan Porth, I think you can understand why I feel so proud! ❤️
