One Language… Endless Possibilities

People often ask why my paintings vary so much. One day it may be a dramatic Cornish seascape at Mawgan Porth, the next a portrait, wildlife or a piece of architecture.

The answer is simple... they all come from the same foundations.

After teaching art in private schools in Britain and Australia for over 25 years, I moved to Cornwall where, over the last 20 years, I've developed and refined a unique approach to teaching art.

Everything I teach is built around the core fundamentals of Sketch, Perspective and Paint... what I call the grammar, spelling and punctuation of art.

Together we explore the psychology of perception... how the eye and brain work together... why we notice some things and overlook others... alongside perspective, atmospheric perspective, light, shadow, reflections, angles, colour, geology, geography and the physics behind what we observe.

These aren't separate subjects... they're all part of the same visual language.

Whether I'm painting the sea at Mawgan Porth, a portrait, wildlife or architecture... the subject changes... the foundations do not.

Once you understand those foundations, every brushstroke becomes a conscious choice. You can follow the principles, adapt them or deliberately break them because you understand the effect each decision will create.

I still enjoy the occasional fortuitous accident... those unexpected moments that make us stop and wonder, "Where did that come from?" Understanding doesn't remove the magic... it simply helps us recognise it, appreciate it and, when we choose, recreate it.

For me, that's one of the greatest joys of teaching. Not encouraging people to paint like me, but helping them understand the language of art well enough to discover their own voice.
