There’s More to My Beach Art Lessons Than Meets the Eye
Many people first discover my art lessons while walking along the beach in Mawgan Porth, Cornwall.
They see a group painting beside the sea and may naturally assume that I am teaching everyone how to complete one particular picture.
What they are actually seeing is often the first step in a much deeper creative journey: learning how to see differently.
Art is about understanding, not copying
The picture we create during an art lesson is the vehicle for learning. The real focus is understanding the fundamentals of art, including light, perspective, colour, form and composition.
Once you understand these principles, you are no longer dependent on copying another artist’s work. You gain the freedom to interpret what you see, explore your own ideas and develop an artistic style that is completely your own.
I do not teach people to paint like me. I teach people how to understand what they are looking at so they can make their own creative decisions.
From the first nine hours to original artwork
The artists featured in these photographs are not copying my paintings. They are using the skills they have learnt to create original artwork in their own individual styles.
Many began by completing the first nine hours of The Secret of Art, where they developed a practical understanding of the essential foundations of drawing and painting.
Some have now progressed to exhibiting and selling their artwork online and through Betty’s in Mawgan Porth. Their work does not look like mine, or like one another’s, because the purpose of the course is not to produce copies. It is to give each artist the skills and confidence to create something that is genuinely their own.
Art lessons beyond the beach
Cornwall is home, and Mawgan Porth is where many people first meet me. My heart will always be here, but my teaching has also taken me far beyond the beach.
I have taught professionally in schools, worked with students around the world, taught during my travels and continued to support artists through Zoom lessons and my online art course.
I also offer private art lessons, creative wellbeing sessions, workshops in different locations and corporate team building experiences for small groups and large events.
These sessions are not simply about producing a finished picture. They encourage people to slow down, observe more carefully, communicate, solve problems creatively and change the way they process and see the world around them.
Art, wellbeing and creative confidence
Learning art can have a powerful effect on wellbeing. It gives the mind something positive to focus on, encourages you to be present and helps you reconnect with your own imagination.
For some people, an art lesson is a relaxing and enjoyable experience. For others, it becomes the beginning of a lifelong creative journey.
The location may change, whether we meet on a beach in Cornwall, in a school, at a business event, in another part of the world or online through Zoom, but the aim remains the same: to help you understand the fundamentals of art so you can create with confidence.
The only limitation is your imagination
Once you understand the foundations, you are free to express yourself in your own style.
You are no longer asking, “How do I copy that picture?” Instead, you begin asking, “What do I want to create, and how can I express what I see?”
That is the real purpose of my teaching.
If you have seen me teaching on the beach in Mawgan Porth and thought it was simply a lesson in creating one particular painting, I hope this gives you a glimpse of what is really possible.
The beach lesson may be where the journey begins, but it certainly does not have to be where it ends.
