Three Generations in the Sunshine
Some days remind me exactly why I love teaching art on the beach in Mawgan Porth, Cornwall.
Today, one of the King Surf boys treated three very special ladies in his life to an Art at the Beach experience... his 90 year old granny, his mum and his girlfriend. Three generations together, painting in the Cornish sunshine, creating memories that I hope will last a lifetime.
There were plenty of giggles, lots of laughter and, as always, plenty of learning.
At the beginning of the lesson I could see the familiar puzzled expressions as I started talking about how much we think we see compared with what we actually observe. It's something I see with almost every new student. Then, little by little, everything begins to make sense.
Colours become richer. Shadows become meaningful. Shapes become easier to understand. By the end of the session they weren't simply painting... they were really seeing.
That moment is always my favourite.
My teaching isn't about copying someone else's artwork. It's about understanding the grammar, spelling and punctuation of art so that you can confidently create your own. Art is the vehicle. Understanding is the destination.
Whether you're looking for a memorable Cornwall holiday experience, a mindful way to slow down, quality family time or a way to develop your artistic skills, my aim is always the same... to replace chance with understanding and help you see the world with fresh eyes.
Painting together is such a wonderful way to connect across generations. Everyone learns at their own pace, everyone encourages each other, and the conversations and laughter become just as important as the paintings themselves.
The biggest transformation is not always on the canvas. Sometimes it's the confidence people discover, the excitement of finally understanding what they've been looking at all along, and the realisation that anyone can learn when they're shown the underlying principles.
It was a beautiful summer's day in Mawgan Porth, filled with sunshine, creativity and wonderful company. Thank you to this lovely family for allowing me to be part of such a special memory.
If you're visiting Cornwall and would like to experience Art at the Beach, whether as an individual, couple, family or group, I'd love to help you discover that learning to paint begins by learning to see.
