What Art Can Do in Mawgan Porth
A little glimpse of what art can do here in Mawgan Porth, Cornwall...
Not just the finished picture, but the smiles, the confidence, the calm concentration and the quiet surprise when someone realises they can do far more than they thought.
That is the part I love most.
Art can give people a reason to slow down, breathe, look properly and become more present. It invites them to notice colour, light, shape, movement, atmosphere and feeling. It takes them out of the busy noise of everyday life for a while and brings them back to what is right in front of them.
Sometimes people arrive nervous. Sometimes they apologise before they begin. Sometimes they tell me they cannot draw, cannot paint, or have not done anything creative for years.
Then, little by little, something changes.
They start to see differently. They trust their own eyes more. They begin to understand what they are looking at. Their marks become freer, their confidence grows, and the process becomes less about getting it right and more about discovering what is possible.
Here in Mawgan Porth, the beach itself becomes part of that experience. The sound of the sea, the shifting light, the movement of the clouds, the colour in the cliffs and the atmosphere of Cornwall all help people connect with the moment.
For me, outdoor painting is not about forcing everyone into the same style. It is about helping each person understand the fundamentals of seeing, so they can create artwork in their own way.
In this video, you will see beach art lessons, family groups, one-to-one tuition, online students, original paintings, student artwork and lots of lovely smiles.
Some students even go on to build enough confidence and skill to have their work displayed and sold at Betty’s in Mawgan Porth, which is always such a wonderful full-circle moment.
Alongside teaching, I also create original paintings, prints and personalised commissions inspired by Cornwall, meaningful places, architecture, seascapes, people, animals and the stories that matter.
A painting can become more than a picture. It can hold a memory, a place, a feeling, or a moment in someone’s life.
That is what I love about art. Not pressure. Not perfection. Just awareness, confidence, connection and the quiet joy of discovering what was already there.
