What an absolute joy it was to teach this amazing 11 year old today.
He completely lit up as he painted… absorbing not only the practical side of brushwork, paint mixing, waves, shadows, light, distance, colour and size differences… but also the deeper understanding behind it all… the science, geology and perspective right in front of him.
The real magic was watching him begin to pre-empt the next step before I even said it… using the knowledge he had already taken in and applying it as we moved forward. That is always such a wonderful moment to witness… when someone is no longer guessing, but truly starting to see and understand.
That smile says it all.
This is what I love most about teaching art… helping people understand what they are seeing, so they can translate it with confidence into paint, line, tone and form… and then watching the spark come alive.
He was an absolute pleasure to work with… bright, engaged, curious and full of potential.
