Young Artist Seascape Lesson in Cornwall
This afternoon I worked with a wonderful nine-year-old who painted a seascape full of headland, cliffs and garden, using bright, beautiful colour and real understanding of how a picture works.
We explored how colours become softer and greyer towards the horizon… then gradually build in strength, volume and colour as they come forward. She learned how to hold the brush, how to load the brush, why colours do what they do, how to blend into the distance, and how to bring parts of the painting forwards or push them back.
The smile on her face says it all.
This is why I teach the way I do… it is so much more than a “copy me” art lesson. It changes the way children see, think about and analyse the world in front of them. Once they understand the why behind what they are doing, everything starts to make sense.
Through my art lessons in Cornwall, children and adults learn the core fundamentals behind drawing and painting… not how to copy me, but how to understand what they are seeing so they can grow their own confidence, knowledge and technique.
